The Qaitbay Citadel is considered one of the most important defensive strongholds, not only in Egypt but also along the Mediterranean Sea coast. It played a crucial role in protecting Alexandria from potential invaders. The Citadel was constructed on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. While earthquakes destroyed the Lighthouse itself over time, some of the stones from the lighthouse were likely reused in the Citadel's construction.
